Sitosterol
Explanation: Sitosterol is an unsaturated plant-based fat, known as a phytosterol, that closely resembles cholesterol in structure. It is naturally found in various plant foods, including nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils. While sitosterol can help lower cholesterol levels by limiting its absorption in the intestines, excessive accumulation in the body may indicate a rare inherited condition called sitosterolemia, which affects fat metabolism.
Test Purpose: Detect sitosterolemia, a rare genetic disorder causing elevated sitosterol levels.
